Emergency Contraception (EC) can prevent a pregnancy when used after unprotected sex, a broken condom, or rape. The sooner you use it the more likely it is to prevent pregnancy.
There are two types of EC:
- Pills
- Copper IUD (intrauterine device)

Get Emergency Contraception
Clinics
You can get free EC pills at the Health Department's Sexual Health Clinics. You don’t need an appointment or parental consent.
Public Hospitals
Emergency Contraception is available 24 hours a day at public hospitals. Services are confidential and open to all. You will be helped regardless of your immigration status.
Pharmacies
You can buy certain types of EC pills at a pharmacy without a prescription. It costs $40 to $50 and may be covered by your insurance. EC pills are covered for Medicaid members.
