If you're a general contractor seeking permits to build 1-, 2-, or 3-family homes, you must register with the Department of Buildings (DOB). DOB will only approve building permits to registered general contractors for these projects.
In order to become a registered General Contractor, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Be able to read and write in English.
- Have good moral character so as to not adversely impact upon fitness to perform the duties and responsibilities of a General Contractor.
- Pass a background investigation.
Unregistered general contractors who are found building 1-, 2-, or 3-family homes may face violations, stop work orders, criminal charges, and/or seizure of vehicles and construction tools.
