Incarcerated people in Department of Correction (DOC) facilities may have an incarcerated person fund account. They can use money from their account to buy food in the commissary and more.

You can deposit money into an incarcerated person's account by phone, online, by mail, or in person.

Learn more about incarcerated person fund accounts.

DOC has arranged with several money transfer agents to accept deposits for an incarcerated person fund account. You can make a deposit using a credit card or debit card over the phone or online.

A fee is charged for all transactions handled by the money transfer agents. DOC does not receive any of these fees.

To transfer money to an incarcerated person using a money transfer agent, you must provide the incarcerated person's first and last name and book and case number.

To look up an incarcerated person's book and case number, go to the Incarcerated Person Location and Information page.

If an incarcerated person is transferred to a State facility, the money in their account will automatically transfer to the new facility. There might be a slight delay in the transfer.

If you are a family member or friend and are having difficulty getting the funds transferred, you can make a complaint against the Department of Correction. To make a complaint, go to the City Agency or Worker Feedback page.

If an incarcerated person is transferred to a facility outside of New York State, the money in their account will not automatically transfer to the new facility.

The incarcerated person must send an authorization letter for transfer of funds, either notarized or on facility letterhead, with all of the following information:

  • Book & Case number they had while incarcerated within NYC DOC (or NYSID number)
