DOC has arranged with several money transfer agents to accept deposits for an incarcerated person fund account. You can make a deposit using a credit card or debit card over the phone or online.

A fee is charged for all transactions handled by the money transfer agents. DOC does not receive any of these fees.

To transfer money to an incarcerated person using a money transfer agent, you must provide the incarcerated person's first and last name and book and case number.

The City Code required by Western Union to transfer funds is NYCITYDOC and the State Code is NY.

You can deposit money into an incarcerated person's account by mailing a bank check or money order. Cash, personal checks, and certified checks aren’t accepted by mail.  Make the bank check or money order payable to the incarcerated person and include their book and case number.

You can deposit money into an incarcerated person's account in person.

DOC Cashier Offices

Money transfer agents accept in-person cash deposits through kiosks at DOC Cashier Offices. The kiosks are available 24 hours, 7 days a week, at the following locations:

Walk-in Centers

Money transfer agents also accept deposits at walk-in locations.  Some walk-in centers accept cash deposits. You should contact the money transfer agents directly for walk-in locations.  

Money transfer agents charge fees for deposits. DOC doesn’t receive any of these fees.

If an incarcerated person is transferred to a State facility, the money in their account will automatically transfer to the new facility. There might be a slight delay in the transfer. 

If you are a family member or friend and are having difficulty getting the funds transferred, you can make a complaint against the Department of Correction. To make a complaint, go to the City Agency or Worker Feedback page.

If an incarcerated person is transferred to a facility outside of New York State, the money in their account will not automatically transfer to the new facility. 

The incarcerated person must send an authorization letter for transfer of funds, either notarized or on facility letterhead, with all of the following information:

• Incarcerated person’s name
• Book & Case number they had while incarcerated within NYC DOC (or NYSID number)
• New Facility’s name
• New Facility’s address
• Incarcerated person’s new identifying number in their current facility (Book & Case number or DIN number)

The incarcerated person’s current facility’s Social Service unit can help with this request.

The authorization letter must be sent by mail or fax.

If an individual has a balance in their institutional fund (commissary) at the time of release, they can collect up to $200 in cash immediately upon discharge from the Rikers Island Central Cashier Window. Any remaining funds will be mailed by check to the address provided by the individual at the time of discharge.

If you do not claim your funds upon discharge, you can visit a Department Cashier Window for up to 120 days to collect up to $200 in cash of any unclaimed funds. Any remaining funds will be mailed via check to the address you provide at the time of collection, or you can schedule a day to collect the check from a designated Cashier Window.
