Bus lane camera violations (street-mounted cameras)

Cameras are located at certain bus lane locations. The camera will take a photo and video of your vehicle, and you will receive a Notice of Liability (NOL) in the mail for:

  • Driving in a bus lane
  • Parking in a bus lane
  • Standing in a bus lane

Signs are posted where the cameras are in use to warn drivers to keep out of bus lanes except when making right turns or picking up or dropping off passengers.

MTA bus camera violations

Under the Automated Camera Enforcement (ACE) Program, Notice of Liabilities (NOL) may be issued to motorists captured by bus-mounted cameras for:

  • Standing or parking in a bus lane
  • Standing or stopping in a bus stop
  • Double parking

You can view your bus lane (street-mounted) or MTA bus camera violation video online if you have the NOL number and the PIN provided on the NOL.

If a vehicle has more than one bus lane restriction violation captured by a street-mounted camera that has either been paid, is in judgment, or had hearing and was found guilty within a rolling 12-month period, fines will increase with each additional violation.

If a vehicle has more than one bus operation-related traffic regulation violation captured by an MTA bus camera that has either been paid, is in judgment, or had hearing and was found guilty within a rolling 12-month period, fines will increase with each additional violation.

Fines for violations within a 12-month period:

  • First offense: $50
  • Second offense: $100
  • Third offense: $150
  • Fourth offense: $200
  • Each subsequent offense: $250

Starting August 19, 2024, progressive fines for bus lane camera violations captured by street-mounted cameras will be separated from violations captured by MTA buses.

Any combination of bus lane and bus stop camera violations captured by MTA buses will count towards progressive fines in the MTA bus camera violations NOLs issued.

Bus lane camera violations captured by street-mounted cameras will have only instances of those violations captured by street-mounted cameras included in the progressive fines for those NOLs issued.

Vehicles that are registered with the DOF Rental Program are excluded from the progressive fines.

The NYPD also patrols bus lanes and will issue violations for being in a bus lane. If you get a violation from a police officer for driving in a bus lane, it’s considered a moving violation. The ticket will be yellow and the fine is $150.

Information about paying or disputing a moving violation is on the back of the violation. For more information about moving violations, visit the Traffic Ticket page.
