The federal government shut down on Wednesday, October 1 at midnight. Some federal agency offices and programs will be affected. Various national parks, museums, and monuments will close and passport and visa applications will be delayed.
However, City and State agencies will not be affected by this shutdown.
The following will remain open:
- New York City public schools
- Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices
- Post offices (mail delivery will continue)
- Federal courts
The shutdown does not affect the payment of:
- SNAP (food stamps)
- Cash assistance
- Unemployment
- Social Security
- Medicare
- Medicaid
It is unknown how long the federal government shutdown will last.
