Owners of 1- and 2-family homes who receive the STAR or ESTAR in 2024 or 2025 exemption or credit will receive a reimbursement check of $59.30 to pay for the cost of one 45 gallon official NYC Bin. 

The Department of Finance (DOF) will send letters in October 2025 notifying homeowners of this refund.  

Homeowners who have: 

  • Already purchased their NYC Bin online or by phone will automatically receive a check for $59.30.
  • Not yet purchased their NYC Bin will receive a letter notifying them that when they purchase their bin online or by phone, they will automatically receive a check within 30 days of making their purchase.
  • Purchased or will purchase their NYC Bin in person from Home Depot will receive a voucher code that they can use (with a proof of purchase) to request their reimbursement check. Request reimbursement with your voucher code online at www.nyc.gov/freetrashbins.

The deadline to request a reimbursement check is June 1, 2026.

Reimbursement checks must be cashed or deposited within 90 days of the date on the check.

If you purchase or will purchase a NYC Bin in person from a vendor you will need to apply for a reimbursement check. You will need to submit your voucher code and proof of purchase to DOF.  

Acceptable forms of proof of purchase are:

  • A receipt
  • A copy of a credit card bill or bank statement showing the purchase
  • A photo of your bin with either the bin serial number or your home address in the picture

The deadline to request a reimbursement check is June 1, 2026.

Damaged Check
 
If the check you receive is damaged, please send it to the mailing address below. Rather than send you a new check, DOF will add the reimbursement as a credit to your property tax account.

Lost or Misplaced Check

If you lose your check, contact DOF at nyc.gov/dofcustomerservice. Be sure to include your full name along with the address of the property.

Allow up to four weeks for DOF to review your claim and reissue a reimbursement as a credit to your property tax account.

Expired Check

Reimbursement checks are valid for 90 days. If you have a check that is more than 90 days old, do not attempt to deposit or cash the check.

Instead, you should contact DOF at nyc.gov/dofcustomerservice.

Provide DOF with your full name, borough, and address where your property is located, and the check number. Allow up to four weeks for DOF to review your claim.
