NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) is managing a pilot program with Throne Labs, Inc., to install modular public restrooms.

This program brings free and accessible bathrooms to public plazas and high-traffic areas where New Yorkers currently lack reliable access to bathroom facilities.

Each restroom will feature a comfortable interior, touchless entry, running-water sink, flushing toilet, climate control, and baby changing station. Restrooms will be open daily from 7 AM to 10 PM.

You can unlock and access the restrooms by using one of the following options:

Text “Throne” to 202-751-3694 and respond with the unit number (in orange above the QR code)

Scan the big QR code near the door with your smartphone camera and send the pre-populated text message

Use the Throne Bathroom Network app, locate the Throne, and click “Open Door”

Tap a Throne entry card against the right side of the door (distributed for free by local community partners)

Restroom Access Time Limit

After 10 minutes, a light and sound alarm will go off and the doors will open.

The modular public restrooms are currently being installed on a rolling basis from mid-September to late October 2026.

They will be available in the following areas:
